Federal High Court Cracks Down on Currency Racketeers: Two Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment.

In a significant move to combat currency manipulation, Justice E.U. Akpan of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced two individuals, Suleiman Kolawole Nurudeen and Yekeen Kazeem Ayoade, to six months imprisonment each for currency racketeering. The duo was arraigned by the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge bordering on naira abuse.

The Crime:
The convicts sold N50,000 denominations issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria for N60,000, violating Section 21 (4) of the Central Bank Act 2007.

The Sentence:
Justice Akpan convicted and sentenced the pair to six months imprisonment or an option of fine of N50,000. They also forfeited N224,000 and a Moniepoint Point of Sale (POS) to the Federal Government.

Background:
Nurudeen and Ayoade were arrested on February 20, 2024, and arraigned on May 24, 2024. Their guilty plea led to a swift conviction.

This ruling demonstrates the EFCC’s commitment to combating financial crimes and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s currency. Similar cases have been reported in Port Harcourt, where Azubuike Mamwu Obasi was jailed for currency racketeering.
