Sokoto State Under Siege: Bandits Seize Control, Appoint and Depose Village Heads at Will - Sokoto LGA Chairman

Sokoto State Grapples with Banditry: Local Government Chairman Reveals Extent of Control.

The Chairman of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa, has made a startling revelation about the pervasive influence of bandits in his council. Despite efforts to combat insecurity, some communities remain under bandit control, with notorious leader Kachalla Bello Turji’s group appointing and deposing village heads at will.

Kamarawa appealed for the reinstatement of a military camp in Kagara, which was previously relocated, citing its positive impact on maintaining relative peace in the affected areas. He noted a slight improvement in the situation since the death of bandit kingpin Halilu Sububu about a month ago, with decreased attacks and safer travel on previously unsafe roads.

In response, Minister of State for Defence Alhaji Bello Matawalle assured residents of President Bola Tinubu’s deep concern about the ongoing insecurity in the North. The President has appointed northerners to key security positions to address this issue.

Key Measures Announced:

Militarization of Danger Areas: A military base will be established at Gundumi to patrol the previously closed Gundumi-Marnona road.
Additional Security Deployment: More security personnel will be deployed to Isa Local Government Area.
Community Cooperation: Local communities are urged to provide information on bandits’ movements to support security efforts.

Minister Matawalle’s Assurance

The Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, has assured the residents of Isa Local Government Area that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about the ongoing insecurity in the North.

“We are committed to addressing the security challenges in the region,” Matawalle said. “The President has directed me to ensure militarisation of all danger areas in the state.”

Key Measures Announced

– Establishment of a military base at Gundumi to patrol the previously closed Gundumi-Marnona road.
– Deployment of additional security personnel to Isa Local Government Area.
– Call for community cooperation in providing information on bandits’ movements.

Matawalle emphasized that security is everyone’s business, stressing the need for collective action to combat banditry.

“We need your support because the issue of security is everyone’s business,” Matawalle said. “We need to know about the bandits’ movement.”

Local Government Chairman’s Plea

Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa appealed for increased military presence in the area, citing the positive impact of the previously relocated military camp.

“We are appealing for a military camp in Kagara to take care of those areas,” Kamarawa said. “We used to have a camp there before it was relocated. Then there was relative peace in those places. So we want the camp back.”

Impact of Banditry

The persistent banditry has affected daily life in the communities, with residents living in fear of attacks and kidnappings.

“The situation has slightly improved since the death of Halilu Sububu, a notorious bandit kingpin, about a month ago,” Kamarawa noted. “Attacks on communities have decreased, and residents can now travel on some previously unsafe roads.”

However, the communities remain vulnerable to bandit attacks, and the local government chairman urged the government to take decisive action.

“We are living peacefully in Isa town, but the problem is in the eastern part of Isa,” Kamarawa said. “There are places that are still under the control of bandits. They appoint and depose village heads there.”

The ongoing insecurity in Sokoto State highlights the need for sustained efforts to combat banditry and ensure the safety of residents.
