NAF Acquires 50 Fighter Jets to Intensify Anti-Terrorism Operations
Counter-Insurgency War: NAF Procures 50 Aircraft.
The Nigerian Air Force is bolstering its counter-insurgency operations with the procurement of 50 new aircraft by 2026, as announced by Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar. This move aims to intensify efforts against adversaries wreaking havoc across the country. The Air Force has already inducted 12 aircraft into its inventory over the past year, including fighter jets and Super Tucano aircraft.
The expanded counter-insurgency operation in the North West region and anti-oil theft operations in the South-South are key focus areas. Abubakar emphasized the significance of innovative thinking, resilience and dedication in achieving the desired objectives.
To further enhance its capabilities, the Air Force has established two new staff branches: the Civil Military Relations Branch and the NAF Transformation and Innovation Branch. These developments underscore the government’s concerns about internal security, highlighting the need for enhanced counter-insurgency measures.
The procurement is scheduled to take place between December 2024 and 2026, with Abubakar expressing confidence in the ability of the air troops to rise to the occasion and excel in all tasks set before them.

Nigerian Army Confirms Emergence of New Terrorist Group “Lukarawas” in Northwest
Nigerian Army Battles New Terror Group, Lukarawas, in Northwest.
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lukarawas, in the northwest region of the country. Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced this during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, November 8.
According to Buba, Lukarawas originated from the Republic of Niger following the coup that disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. The group exploited the cooperation gaps and difficult terrain to infiltrate remote areas in northwest states, spreading their ideology.
Initially, locals accepted the group, believing they meant well. However, they failed to report the group’s movements to military and security agencies. Troops are currently working to locate and eliminate the threat.
This development highlights concerns about rising insecurity in northwest Nigeria, where terrorist groups like Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) and Jama’at Nusrat al Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) are already active.
