University Student Bags 14 Years Jail Term for Cybercrime in Port Harcourt
University of Port Harcourt Final Year Student Sentenced to 14 Years for Internet Fraud.
Henry Nathaniel Ekanem, a final year student at the University of Port Harcourt, has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison for internet fraud by Justice A. T. Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. However, I found that the sentence was actually two years imprisonment on each of the seven counts, or an option of fine of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) payable into the Consolidated Revenue Account of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Ekanem was found guilty of obtaining money under false pretense and impersonation, specifically for defrauding Diana Roskov of $22 by pretending to be Coran Capsha, manager of singer Chris Stapleton. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in September 2024 for internet-related offenses.
The judge ordered the forfeiture of all phones recovered from Ekanem, considered proceeds of crime, and required him to sign an affidavit of good behavior before the court. This verdict is part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud in Nigeria, with similar cases resulting in prison sentences and fines for convicted fraudsters.
