A devastating incident has shaken the Awoyemi community in Okpella, Edo State, as gunmen suspected to be assassins brutally killed Abdulrafiu Afegbua, also known as Uroy, on October 5, 2024. The middle-aged man was at home with his wife when he received a mysterious phone call that led to his untimely demise.
The Fateful Night
Afegbua’s wife tried to dissuade him from leaving their residence at the late hour, but he hastily departed to meet the caller. Unbeknownst to him, a group of assailants lay in wait. They ambushed Afegbua, shooting him in the chest and neck, resulting in his tragic death.
Desperate Search and Confirmation
As hours passed without word from her husband, Afegbua’s distressed wife repeatedly called his mobile phone, only to be met with silence. A search party was formed the following morning, and they discovered Afegbua’s lifeless body in a nearby bush, near his abandoned motorbike.
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with spokesperson SP Moses Yamu stating that investigations are currently underway. The community is left reeling from this senseless act of violence, and justice for Afegbua’s family remains a pressing concern.

The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder, with SP Moses Yamu assuring that all necessary measures will be taken to apprehend the perpetrators.
“We are working tirelessly to unravel the circumstances surrounding Afegbua’s death,” Yamu said. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in bringing the culprits to justice.”

As the suspect approached Gawu village, he recklessly crossed the expressway and was struck by a vehicle. Despite being apprehended alive by the mob, vigilantes intervened, taking him to Gawu Babangida Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

A Gawu division police officer, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident. “The deceased’s relatives collected his body. We recovered the stolen motorcycle, which was damaged, and impounded the vehicle involved.”
