A shocking incident in Lokoja, Kogi State, has led to the arrest of Barkisu Sulaiman, a housewife accused of dumping her day-old baby in a gutter. The infant was found alive on October 2, 2024, in the Karaworo area.

 Arrest and Confession

Barkisu was apprehended by residents and handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) after a tip-off from a close friend. The friend, moved by the baby’s plight, confessed Barkisu’s crime to an elderly man in Karaworo-Lokoja.

 Official Statement

NSCDC Commandant Paul Igweibuke confirmed the arrest, stating, “The woman was handed over to my command by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Kogi State.” Barkisu’s husband, who suffers from a spinal cord injury, was unaware of her infidelity.

 Investigation and Consequences

The NSCDC is collaborating with the Ministry of Women Affairs to ensure justice is served. Barkisu remains in custody, facing charges for abandoning her child.

This disturbing incident highlights the need for support systems for vulnerable women and children in Kogi State.

Section 21(1) of the Child Rights Act:

“Any person who abandons a child shall be liable to a fine of N50,000 or imprisonment for a term of one year or both.”

 Reactions from Authorities

Kogi State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajia Fatima Bello, condemned the act, emphasizing the need for increased support for vulnerable women.

“We will ensure Barkisu receives necessary counseling and faces the consequences of her actions.”

 NSCDC’s Role

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has pledged to collaborate with the Ministry of Women Affairs to prevent similar incidents.

“We will intensify patrols and community engagement to protect lives and properties.”
