Hon. EGBALA BASSEY Receives APC Flag for ABI Chairmanship: A New Era Unfolds Amidst Thunderous Support and Enthusiastic Participation.

In preparation for the upcoming Cross River State Local Government Elections set for November 2, 2024, the All Progressives Congress (APC) launched its campaign in Ikom on October 27, 2024, in an event that was nothing short of spectacular. As dawn broke over Ikom, a bustling commercial center, to the streets came alive with vibrant supporters clad in the party’s colors. An electric atmosphere filled the air as music and chants reverberated through the city, drawing an ever-growing crowd to the central rally ground.

By midday, Ikom was transformed into a vast sea of enthusiastic participants eager to demonstrate their support. The energy was palpable, with party leaders igniting fervor among the attendees. Dignitaries in attendance included the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey; the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem; APC State Party Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba Esq. JP; Senator Eteng Williams; and various commissioners, alongside all local government chairmanship candidates and their vice and councillorship counterparts.

The event commenced with an invocation by Hon. Tity Ndifon, the party’s Vice Chairman for the South-South Zone, followed by the state and national anthems. Key speakers highlighted themes of healing, reconciliation, and party unity, while supporters waved banners and sang in unison, creating a powerful display of solidarity.

Chairman Eba invoked his prerogative, calling forward all 18 local government chairmanship candidates for the ceremonial handing over of flags. As each candidate received their flag, they engaged with the enthusiastic crowd. Among them, the youthful and dynamic Hon. Egbala Bassey, the ABI chairmanship candidate, received his flag to thunderous applause, signaling the dawn of a new era.

The state chairman described Hon. Egbala as the thrush of the 21st century urged party faithfuls in Abi to come out and reiterate the point further by ensuring Hon. Egbala Bassey becomes the chairman of Abi on November 2, 2024.

The state chairman who handed over the flag and insignia of the party to Egbala Bassey on October 27, 2024 at the Ikom township stadium, stated that Egbala’s emergence as Chairman Abi local government area potence greatness and economic prosperity for the betterment of Abi.

In his remarks, the incoming Chairman of Abi local government area Hon. Egbala Bassey vouch bring Abi local government area out for global competition and building a more robust economy for the people.

The Deputy Governor, representing the absent Governor in his remarks, emphasized the importance of party loyalty, stating that political cross-carpeting would not be tolerated. He announced that the Governor would meet with all aspirants who were unsuccessful in the chairmanship consensus, urging them to submit their names for possible appointments through the party chairman. He stressed that all candidates must reside in their respective local governments and focus on their duties, calling for ongoing support for His Excellency, Ntufam Sen. Prince Edet Otu.

The massive turnout also led to significant traffic congestion, with vehicles stalled for miles, yet local businesses thrived on the influx of visitors. Vendors seized the opportunity to sell everything from food to party memorabilia.

As the rally continued, enthusiasm peaked. Dignitaries took the stage, igniting cheers that resonated throughout Ikom, showcasing the APC’s strength and the community’s desire for progress.

In a poignant vote of thanks, the Obanliku chairmanship candidate Chief Dr. Sunny Ayang declared that his emergence marked the end of the PDP’s influence in the area, promising to invite the State Party Chairman for the final burial of PDP in Obanliku. He expressed gratitude to Governor Otu for his pivotal role in the emergence of all 18 APC candidates, thanking dignitaries for their presence and the supporters for their enthusiastic participation that made the event a resounding success.

The event concluded with a closing prayer led by Rev. Mrs. Akpama, followed by the state and national anthems.

Presided over by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, this gathering marked a pivotal moment in the political evolution of our state, symbolizing a new era of collaboration, progress, and leadership.

In a moment that encapsulated both promise and progress, Hon. Yibala Inyang, Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, was appointed as the new Chairman of the Forum. Alongside him, the visionary Hon. Chief Egbala Bassey, Executive Chairman of Abi Local Government Area, was entrusted with the role of Publicity Secretary.

The Forum’s leadership team was further strengthened with the nomination of Hon. (Apostle) James Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipality, as Vice Chairman. Other distinguished members of the executive included Hon. Prince Effiom Bassey of Akpabuyo as Secretary, Hon. Peter Undiandeye of Obudu as Treasurer, Hon. Chris Agbeh of Ogoja as Financial Secretary, and Hon. Beatrice Nyiam of Boki as Assistant Secretary.

In his acceptance speech, Chairman Hon. Yibala Inyang humbly acknowledged his new role, emphasizing that he was merely “the first among equals.” He reassured the Forum that under his leadership, they would work collaboratively to support the current administration and further the development of the state.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja: His Life and Times.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was a renowned Nigerian Army officer who made significant contributions to the country’s military. Born on February 28, 1968, in Irepodun, Osun State, Lagbaja spent his early life in Osogbo, where he attended St. Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College.

The Life & Legacy of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja

Lagbaja’s military career began in 1987 when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular Course. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on September 19, 1992, into the Nigerian Infantry Corps. Throughout his career, Lagbaja held various command positions, including:

– Platoon Commander: 93 Battalion (1992-1995) and 72 Special Forces Battalion (1995-2001)
– Commanding Officer: 72 Special Forces Battalion Makurdi (2012-2013 and 2014-2015)
– Chief of Staff: Headquarters 8 Task Force Division, Monguno (2016)
– General Officer Commanding: Headquarters 82 Division (March 2021 – August 2022) and Headquarters 1 Division (August 2022 – June 2023).

Lagbaja also participated in several military operations, including Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi Peninsula, the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Operation Lafiya Dole.

In June 2023, Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu, replacing Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya. Unfortunately, his tenure was cut short when he passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56.

Lagbaja was a highly decorated officer, holding several honors and awards, including the Nigerian Army Medal, Grand Service Star, and Passed Staff Course Dagger. He was married to Mariya Abiodun-Lagbaja and had three children.
