On November 4, 2024, a momentous occasion unfolded at Teny Homes, Ekorinim, Calabar, as the newly elected Chairman of ABI Local Government Area, Hon. Egbala Bassey, and his Vice Chairman, Hon. Joseph Ukata, were officially sworn into office. The reception, marked by a spirit of unity and celebration, attracted numerous leaders and dignitaries from ABI and beyond. It signified a new chapter in ABI’s political history, a time of hope, and a collective commitment to taking the Local Government Area to greater heights.
The event drew attention not only for its importance but also for the quality of speeches and messages delivered. The Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi, praised Hon. Egbala’s emergence as divinely orchestrated, emphasizing unity and peace. He reminded the people of ABI that politics is a contest, where only one victor emerges, and urged all members of the community, whether successful or not, to rally behind the newly elected leaders and work together for progress.
Also present, Barr. Eko Alobo, the Cross River Central Coordinator of the PDP, expressed his personal joy at the election of Hon. Bassey, describing him as a brother and emphasizing that his victory was a divine one. He called on the new Chairman to be magnanimous in victory, ensuring that no one was left behind, regardless of political affiliation.
This theme of inclusivity was echoed by numerous others, including Hon. Sylvester Mboto, the Councillor representing Adadama, who pledged the support of the entire council and expressed confidence in Hon. Bassey’s leadership.
Hon. Ekwele Agube, speaking on behalf of the women’s wing, reminded the gathering that politics, like any game, has its ups and downs, but today’s victory was a reason for celebration. She expressed the readiness of the women in ABI to support the new leadership in advancing the community.
Several other dignitaries took to the podium, including Rt. Hon. Davies Ettah, the Deputy Majority Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly, who congratulated Hon. Bassey, his Vice Chairman, and the entire community. He assured the people that their leaders had the capability to lead ABI to new heights.
Other notable speakers included Hon. Chucks Agube, who called attention to critical issues like road infrastructure in the Bahumono axis, the ABI transportation (ABITrans), the ABI sanitation Agency (ABISA) and lingering crisis of Amagu and Adadama, urging the Chairman to address these concerns promptly.
Hon. Farathor Robinson, the immediate past Chairman of ABI, advised Hon. Bassey to create a legacy of unity and positive change, stressing the importance of embracing everyone, even those who had been his political rivals.
In a heartfelt address, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, emphasized the importance of youth development and inclusivity at all levels of government. He assured the people that the Governor’s commitment to the progress of ABI would be mirrored at the local government level, with Hon. Bassey playing a key role in delivering the dividends of democracy to his people.
The Paramount Ruler of ABI, His Royal Majesty Ovai Elder Solomon Osim Edward, also graced the occasion. He expressed gratitude to God for the successful election and conveyed his confidence in Hon. Bassey’s ability to bring about positive change, particularly in improving the road infrastructure in the Bahumono axis. His Royal Majesty’s words reflected the optimism shared by the entire community regarding the incoming administration.
Hon. Emmanuel Elemi, representing the ABI All Stars, reaffirmed their unflinching support for Hon. Bassey, pledging that the group would stand behind his administration 100%. The message of unity continued to be a recurring theme, with leaders from various sectors of ABI society offering their support and encouragement.
In his response, Hon. Egbala Bassey thanked everyone for their presence and support. He acknowledged the efforts of the Chief of Staff and his wife, and reemphasized his campaign slogan of a “Greater ABI.” Hon. Bassey assured the people that his administration would be one of service, with a focus on unity, progress, and the betterment of all ABI sons and daughters. He vowed to leverage the intellectual and human resources of the community to ensure that ABI reached its full potential. His commitment to working with all parties, regardless of political affiliation, underscored his vision of a united and prosperous ABI.
As the event came to a close, attendees were filled with optimism for the future, with a renewed sense of hope for ABI’s progress under its new leadership. The closing prayer, led by Hon. Emmanuel Egbe, marked the end of the formal proceedings, leaving behind a community united in purpose and ready to embark on a new chapter of leadership and development.

A New Era for the CRS Forum of L.G. Chairmen: Hon. Yibala Inyang, Hon. Egbala Bassey, and Others Emerge in the New Leadership.
On Monday, November 18, 2024, a historic and transformative event unfolded at the Glass House within the Government House in Calabar—the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Local Government Chairmen of Cross River State. Presided over by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, this gathering marked a pivotal moment in the political evolution of our state, symbolizing a new era of collaboration, progress, and leadership.
In a moment that encapsulated both promise and progress, Hon. Yibala Inyang, Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, was appointed as the new Chairman of the Forum. Alongside him, the visionary Hon. Chief Egbala Bassey, Executive Chairman of Abi Local Government Area, was entrusted with the role of Publicity Secretary.
The Forum’s leadership team was further strengthened with the nomination of Hon. (Apostle) James Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipality, as Vice Chairman. Other distinguished members of the executive included Hon. Prince Effiom Bassey of Akpabuyo as Secretary, Hon. Peter Undiandeye of Obudu as Treasurer, Hon. Chris Agbeh of Ogoja as Financial Secretary, and Hon. Beatrice Nyiam of Boki as Assistant Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman Hon. Yibala Inyang humbly acknowledged his new role, emphasizing that he was merely “the first among equals.” He reassured the Forum that under his leadership, they would work collaboratively to support the current administration and further the development of the state.
Apostle James Anam, who was appointed Vice Chairman, expressed his deep gratitude with characteristic humility. He thanked the people of Calabar Municipality for their unwavering trust and support, which he noted had inspired his passion for service and his commitment to excellence. He pledged to work diligently with the Chairman and other executive members to foster cooperation, drive innovation, and tackle the unique challenges facing the local governments of Cross River. Together, they aim to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all Cross Riverians.

The Life & Legacy of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja
Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja: His Life and Times.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was a renowned Nigerian Army officer who made significant contributions to the country’s military. Born on February 28, 1968, in Irepodun, Osun State, Lagbaja spent his early life in Osogbo, where he attended St. Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College.
Lagbaja’s military career began in 1987 when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular Course. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on September 19, 1992, into the Nigerian Infantry Corps. Throughout his career, Lagbaja held various command positions, including:
– Platoon Commander: 93 Battalion (1992-1995) and 72 Special Forces Battalion (1995-2001)
– Commanding Officer: 72 Special Forces Battalion Makurdi (2012-2013 and 2014-2015)
– Chief of Staff: Headquarters 8 Task Force Division, Monguno (2016)
– General Officer Commanding: Headquarters 82 Division (March 2021 – August 2022) and Headquarters 1 Division (August 2022 – June 2023).
Lagbaja also participated in several military operations, including Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi Peninsula, the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Operation Lafiya Dole.
In June 2023, Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu, replacing Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya. Unfortunately, his tenure was cut short when he passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56.
Lagbaja was a highly decorated officer, holding several honors and awards, including the Nigerian Army Medal, Grand Service Star, and Passed Staff Course Dagger. He was married to Mariya Abiodun-Lagbaja and had three children.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja’s remarkable life and career serve as a testament to his unwavering dedication to Nigeria and its people. His exemplary leadership, strategic vision, and selfless service have left an indelible mark on the Nigerian military.
