On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, a momentous political transition unfolded in the heart of ABI Local Government Area (LGA) in Cross River State, as the 8th Legislative Assembly was officially inaugurated under the auspices of the Executive Chairman of ABI LGA, Hon. Chief Egbala Bassey. The ceremony, a dazzling display of political and cultural significance, drew a vibrant crowd of party supporters, well-wishers, and dignitaries, all converging to witness this historic event.
Traditional rulers adorned in regal attire added a dignified air to the occasion, while the local community, dressed in the resplendent colors of their heritage, brought the ABI Council Secretariat to life with the rhythmic pulse of traditional dances and the celebratory sounds of drums. The atmosphere was charged with excitement, as the assembly’s inauguration not only marked a new chapter in local governance but also underscored the rich cultural fabric that defines ABI.
The momentous occasion marked by the presence of distinguished dignitaries. Notable figures included the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi; the Chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Ovai Elder Osim Edward JP; the Chairman of Akamkpa LGA, Sir Felix Akposi; the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mrs. Akei Ani; the Acting Paramount Ruler of ABI, Chief John Ivon; ABI Vice-Chairman, Hon. Joseph Ukata; former Chairman, Hon. Chucks Agube; ABI APC Chairman, Pst. Josuah Igboke; former Special Adviser to the Governor on Shanghai Farms, Hon. Sunny Udeh; Clerk of ABI Council, Effiom Emma Esq.; as well as other political leaders and members of the press.
The Clerk of the Assembly, Effiom Emma Esq., emphasized that the inauguration was fully grounded in the law, citing Section 25, Sub-section 22 of the Cross River State Local Government Development Laws. With this legal framework, he invited the Chairman to officially proclaim the commencement of the 8th Legislative Assembly. As part of the ceremony, the Clerk moved swiftly to confirm the election of the newly elected Councilors, validating their appointment in accordance with public office best practices, including their Code of Conduct Bureau forms.
Following the confirmation, the Clerk proceeded with the roll call, introducing the ten newly elected Councilors of the 8th ABI Legislative Assembly. Each councilor introduced themselves in turn, representing their respective constituencies: Sylvester Mboto (Adadama Ward), Tete Christopher (Afafanyi/Igonigoni), Michael Eko (Ebom/Ebijakara), Victor Ewa (Ediba/Anong), Olivia Bassey (Ekureku I), Richard Eja (Ekureku II), Agbong Nchewi (Imabana I), Tebe Isong (Imabana II), Fortune Eyu (Itigidi), and Seta Bassey (Usumutong Abeugo). This assembly signifies a new chapter in the political landscape of ABI, setting the stage for a future of effective governance and service to the people.
In his heartfelt goodwill message, the Chairman, Hon. Egbala Bassey, extended a warm and gracious welcome to all in attendance at the inauguration of the ABI 8th Legislative Assembly. He underscored the fundamental role of democracy at the grassroots level, particularly in the context of local government autonomy. With fervor and conviction, he prayed for divine guidance, asking Almighty God to bless the newly elected Councilors with wisdom and discernment, enabling them to serve with efficiency and integrity for the growth and advancement of ABI LGA. He called for a spirit of unity and camaraderie among the Councilors, urging them to engage in meaningful deliberations that would lead to the betterment of the community.
The Clerk of the Assembly, Effiom Emma Esq., in his address, welcomed all to the historic occasion, acknowledging the significance of the inauguration. He urged the Councilors-elect to serve with unwavering integrity, dedication, and a deep understanding of the challenges facing their people. The Clerk emphasized the importance of quality deliberations and the passage of well-considered bills that could offer tangible solutions to the issues at hand. He also highlighted that harmony and cooperation were essential to the success of the Assembly, stressing that nothing could thrive in an atmosphere of discord. The Clerk closed his remarks with congratulations, reaffirming the importance of the newly inaugurated body in shaping the future of ABI.
The election for the leadership of the Council was then conducted, with Victor Ewa, representing Ediba/Anong Ward, elected as the Leader of the Council, and Sylvester Mboto of Adadama Ward chosen as the Deputy Leader. Following their election, the newly appointed Leader took the oath of office, administering the same oath to his fellow Councilors, marking the official commencement of their duties.
Each Councilor, upon being called by name, solemnly swore (or affirmed) their allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, pledging to carry out their responsibilities with dedication, transparency, and a commitment to the welfare of their constituents. After taking the oath, the Councilors signed official documents, formally assuming their roles and embarking on their journey to serve the people of ABI LGA with integrity and purpose.
Following a brief recess, the ABI 8th Legislative Assembly reconvened, and the election of key leadership positions marked a significant moment in the session. Tebe Enya Isong (Imabana II) was appointed Majority Leader, Olivia Bassey (Ekureku I) as Deputy Majority Leader, Tete Christopher (Afafanyi/Igonigoni) as Chief Whip, and Fortune Eyu (Itigidi) as Deputy Chief Whip. These appointments solidified the leadership structure, setting the tone for a collaborative and productive legislative session.
In his address, the Leader of the Council, Hon. Victor Ewa, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for making the day possible. He extended his thanks to the ABI Chairman, Hon. Egbala Bassey, and to the Governor of Cross River State for the opportunity to serve the people of ABI. Hon. On Monday, November 18, 2024, a historic and transformative event unfolded at the Glass House within the Government House in Calabar—the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Local Government Chairmen of Cross River State. Presided over by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, this gathering marked a pivotal moment in the political evolution of our state, symbolizing a new era of collaboration, progress, and leadership.
In a moment that encapsulated both promise and progress, Hon. Yibala Inyang, Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, was appointed as the new Chairman of the Forum. Alongside him, the visionary Hon. Chief Egbala Bassey, Executive Chairman of Abi Local Government Area, was entrusted with the role of Publicity Secretary.
The Forum’s leadership team was further strengthened with the nomination of Hon. (Apostle) James Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipality, as Vice Chairman. Other distinguished members of the executive included Hon. Prince Effiom Bassey of Akpabuyo as Secretary, Hon. Peter Undiandeye of Obudu as Treasurer, Hon. Chris Agbeh of Ogoja as Financial Secretary, and Hon. Beatrice Nyiam of Boki as Assistant Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman Hon. Yibala Inyang humbly acknowledged his new role, emphasizing that he was merely “the first among equals.” He reassured the Forum that under his leadership, they would work collaboratively to support the current administration and further the development of the state.
Apostle James Anam, who was appointed Vice Chairman, expressed his deep gratitude with characteristic humility. The Life & Legacy of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja
Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja: His Life and Times.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was a renowned Nigerian Army officer who made significant contributions to the country’s military. Born on February 28, 1968, in Irepodun, Osun State, Lagbaja spent his early life in Osogbo, where he attended St. Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College.
Lagbaja’s military career began in 1987 when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular Course. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on September 19, 1992, into the Nigerian Infantry Corps. Throughout his career, Lagbaja held various command positions, including:
– Platoon Commander: 93 Battalion (1992-1995) and 72 Special Forces Battalion (1995-2001)
– Commanding Officer: 72 Special Forces Battalion Makurdi (2012-2013 and 2014-2015)
– Chief of Staff: Headquarters 8 Task Force Division, Monguno (2016)
– General Officer Commanding: Headquarters 82 Division (March 2021 – August 2022) and Headquarters 1 Division (August 2022 – June 2023).
Lagbaja also participated in several military operations, including Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi Peninsula, the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Operation Lafiya Dole.
In June 2023, Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu, replacing Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya. Unfortunately, his tenure was cut short when he passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56.
Lagbaja was a highly decorated officer, holding several honors and awards, including the Nigerian Army Medal, Grand Service Star, and Passed Staff Course Dagger. He was married to Mariya Abiodun-Lagbaja and had three children.
